Packing in public: Gun owners tired of hiding their weapons embrace 'open carry'

PROVO, UTAH -- For years, Kevin Jensen carried a pistol everywhere he went, tucked in a shoulder holster beneath his clothes.

In hot weather the holster was almost unbearable. Pressed against Jensen's skin, the firearm was heavy and uncomfortable. Hiding the weapon made him feel like a criminal.

Then one evening he stumbled across a site that urged gun owners to do something revolutionary: Carry your gun openly for the world to see as you go about your business.

In most states there's no law against that........

It was fun when I did that in Arizona for awhile. It should be accepted. I can just see it now. The business woman in the go with Gucci purse, Prada shoes Blackberry and hot pink Glock on her hip.

I may start.....I'm tired of wearing a T shirt to keep the holster from rubbing me raw, then a big "Hawaiian" shirt over the top for "conceal".........dang hot.

What's the big deal? I've been openly wearling since the early 1970s. Usually I CC but in the Summer months it is uncomfortable and rubs my skin raw, so I just wear on my belt just like everyone else around here. I never saw it as being a problem much less a story worthy of getting any press. Actually I never thought about it much as cops and I would often stop and chat in the local stores like Walmart and show each other our firearms and talk about the pros and cons of each. Very odd story.

I open carry several times a month. Like TN Andy I'm tired of wearing the over shirt too.

If I can do it living in NW Indiana where 1 out of 2 cars in the parking lot are from ILL you can too!

Don't forget July 4th, 5th and 6th is National Open Carry day and weekend!

I feel your pain! I wish we could open carry down here but you would have tons of idiots that live in Miami-Dade ruining it for everyone else.

I used to open carry quite often before I got my CC permit. To be honest, I was always kinda surprised at the non-response it would get. Of course, I do live in Kentucky

I find it almost funny that nobody has ever said anything as I OC most days just as I would my cell phone, leatherman and calculator. But when the Kalifornian-type tourists come through on their way to Yellowstone and Glacier you do get the stares and "aren't you afraid of the man with a gun?" comments made to store clerks. Blue-State people are just comfortable with being victimized but then I hear Sado-Masochism and other sexual perversions are kind of popular there as well. Go figure.

Thank God I don't live in the "Occupied Zones" where the people need to be treated like children and beaten into submission by storm troopers for trying to live free like humans. Here you are just as likely to end upengaged in conversation with a cop talking about guns and ballistics while handling each others firearms. Just a different attitude between those living under the "Occupation" and those of us living in "Freedom".

Keyword is 'permits'....aka you asked the father(land) for permission, and it was given to you.

...and can just as easily be taken away, unfortunately.

Is it the right to bear arms - or the privilege to bear arms?
